As shared by Kern County Fire Department today:

Fire Inspection Scam Operating in Central and Southern California

    Reported Activity:

Reports indicate that an individual will arrive unannounced at a commercial building implying that they represent an enforcement agency or an insurance underwriter to perform an inspection at no charge to the tenant. Once the inspection is completed, the form is presented for endorsement and handed back to the business owner. A few days later the inspection form (now with fees up to $500) and an attached corresponding invoice arrives by mail for payment. Some businesses will receive an invoice by mail that have not received an inspection for the service.

    Defense Against the Scam:

Step 1 Educate Your Staff – This is your business and you have the right to refuse access to anyone you don’t know.

Step 2 Check Credentials – Every Fire Department Inspector has a uniform, badge, and county/city identification card; request to see them or have staff request a scheduled inspection with the owner.

Step 3 Report – If you are unsure about the validity of any safety inspector contact the Kern County Fire Department Fire Prevention/Code Enforcement Unit at 661-391-7080 or your local Law Enforcement Agency.

In the Wings Studio of Dance has a fantastic Performance and Competition Team (PACT) of youth dancers.  Every donation you make to their fundraisers helps support their travel and competition expense.

    Upcoming:

March 11th (today!)  When you eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Falcon's Nest, mention ITW at checkout and a portion of your purchase will be donated.

March 12 & 13th the rummage sale continues at the studio.  You can still drop off donation items to be sold, and be sure to visit and do some shopping.

Thank you for supporting this youth program!  Dance classes give kids a safe place to go, and helps with their self-esteem, health, and fitness.  It's great for the kids and their success is an excellent reflection on our whole community.

This also includes the opportunity to show off our Mountain Communities at the event on April 16, with marketing collateral and a display.  Your Chamber would really like to be represented during the planning process, and at the event, and need volunteers to make it happen!

The American Pickers are headed to California in March and they're looking for leads throughout the state, specifically interesting characters with interesting items and lots of them!

Mike and Frank only pick private collections so any inquiries from stores, malls, flea markets, museums, auctions, businesses or anything open to the public will not be considered.

    Fraud Alert!

Please share and help us get the word out to local businesses. Small business in several locations nationwide are reporting phone calls from unidentified callers saying they are with the "Local Chamber" or "American Chamber of Commerce" and then asking lots of questions related to the business.

Your local chamber - the Mountain Communities Chamber of Commerce - is not making these phone calls. The phone number of origin for these scam calls appears to be 402-403-0068 - when we look it up online, there are multiple complaints about this number and the "Local Chamber" line seems to be part of the script. Other masked phone numbers could be used.

Beware and do not give out important business information to unknown callers!
